Home Depot Foundation, Habitat for Humanity Give Green Building a $30M Boost

August 07, 2009 by Ian Bryan

Home Depot FoundationThe Home Depot Foundation, a West Coast Green Partner, recently announced they are expanding their partnership with Habitat for Humanity, dedicated to promoting sustainable building.  The Sustainable Building program is a 5-year, $30 million dollar venture aiming to create 5,000 homes that meet the Energy Star guidelines or the higher green building standards.  The program will begin at the end of August and so will the increased grants.  Energy Star approved homes that currently receive $2,000 per house will receive $3,000 and up to $5,000 for homes reaching the higher green standards.

The two powerhouses are on a mission to prove the practicality, importance and affordability of green building.  The Home Depot has a tremendous amount of brand recognition and partnering with a respected organization like Habitat for Humanity to promote sustainability is an idea bound to turn heads and drive interest in a sustainable built environment.  The partnership started in April 2008 has had great success and the expansion only means better times are ahead.
