NanaWall Systems Announces Folding Glass Wall System with Exceptional Energy Star-Rated Thermal Performance

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (September 24, 2008) — NanaWall Systems, the leader in large opening glass walls, announces its newest product for builders, architects, developers and homeowners looking for energy efficiency and design. The NanaWall® WD66, a wood system with Heat Mirror® glazing, provides exceptional thermal performance for any climate and season, from southern California to northern New York. Heat Mirror glazing is the highest-performance insulating glass worldwide.
NanaWall Systems’ opening glass walls can be installed anywhere a traditional wall would stand and provide flexible solutions to large architectural openings, from 8 feet to 40 feet.
According to American Institute of Architects’ Home Design Trends survey, energy conservation features top the list of homeowner priorities when selecting housing design features.
The ENERGY STAR-rated WD66 with Heat Mirror glass, TC 88 (krypton filled) has a U-factor of .23 and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of .31. The WD66 also provides high weather resistance and structural performance. For inswing and outswing models with a raised sill, independent testing indicated that there was no water leakage at 12 psf. It is available either as a top-hung system, where the main weight is carried by the head track or as a floor-mounted system, where the main weight is carried by the floor track.
The Heat Mirror glass, provided by Serious Materials, is as insulating as a solid wall, reducing energy consumption and the expense of air conditioning, heating and artificial lighting all while enhancing comfort, aesthetics and allowing natural daylighting.

At the 2007 Solar Decathlon sponsored by the Department of Energy, the New York Institute of Technology and Santa Clara University both used the WD66 NanaWall with Heat Mirror glass.
The NYIT “OPEN House” demonstrated the best in commercially available solar technology, sustainable architectural design principles, and energy-efficient technologies. The entire south wall of the house was bound by opening NanaWall glass walls that provided natural sunlight and energy-efficient solar-passive design. The result? Less energy spent on lighting and heating the interior of home.
“It was the most aesthetically pleasing yet technologically advanced glass we could find,” said Frank Mruk, associate dean of architecture and design for the New York Institute Technology and faculty advisor to the Solar Decathlon team. In NYIT’s “OPEN House,” the WD66 NanaWall won points for energy balance and helping with ventilation, natural daylighting and design.
Tim Hight, chair of the department of mechanical engineering, at Santa Clara University, which placed third overall in the international design competition, said, “The NanaWall was chosen for aesthetic reasons, to portray an open, California, feel to the house while minimizing heat losses. The Heat Mirror glass was chosen to maximize the heat rejection through the glass.” The WD66 NanaWall system with Heat Mirror glass contributed to the overall very low energy use of the house.
The WD66 system can be provided with various folding doors and folding window combinations, matching French doors, transoms, side lites, and corner posts. There are more than 50 stacking configurations as well as inward opening or outward opening options. It is available in a variety of woods and finishes. Wood choices include Douglas fir, pine or meranti.
